How Can I Check for Scoliosis

Back pain is one the earliest signs of scoliosis, but the condition often starts with a curved spine which may not be immediately noticeable. Many cases, unfortunately, are not spotted until the curved spine reaches an advanced state, enabling the progression of the condition. Therefore, it is important to recognize the signs of scoliosis to prevent increased severity.

The earlier scoliosis is discovered, the easier it is to treat. Yet, while 3% of Americans suffer from scoliosis, less than half of schools require a routine screening process. When asking the question, “How can I check for scoliosis?”, the answer is to learn how to perform a home screening test. Looking for early signs of scoliosis is fast and easy and can be helpful for both adults and children. Some of the tests you can do at home are:

Forward bending:

Start by standing with arms extended and palms held together, then bend at the waist as if to touch the toes. Check for any spinal asymmetry, and stop if there is any piercing back pain.

In this position, unevenness of the hip bones, rib cage or lower back could be early signs of scoliosis.

What to look for when standing straight:

A change in posture is one of the first red flags of a curved spine. Follow step one but, this time, stand straight. Notice, is one shoulder higher than the other or is one arm further away from the body? Are the shoulder blades uneven? Consider all of these questions at this point.

How do clothes hang on the body?

This could reaffirm any previous concerns because, if clothes seem to fit unevenly, it could be a sign of scoliosis. This observation in itself, however, doesn’t necessarily merit a solid diagnosis.

Alignment of ears or eyes:

Although many wouldn’t think to check above the neck for signs of scoliosis, abnormalities in this area should not be ignored. For example, are the eyes tilted? Stand in front of a mirror and observe if the center of the eyes is in line with the center of the hips. Or, from the side, are the ears forward of the shoulders? These signs could be an indication of the need to see a specialist.

Is there an uneven gait?

Finally, take a walk. Check for a slight limp or what may seem to be one leg shorter than the other.

To conduct a scoliosis home screening, perform the following steps with your child.

STEP 1: Forward Bend

Doctors and school nurses routinely use this simple exam during scoliosis screenings. Have your child stand with arms extended and palms held together, then bend at the waist as if touching their toes. Examine the back both from behind and from the front, looking for any signs of asymmetry.

  • Is one side of the rib cage higher than the other?
  • Is the lower back uneven?
  • Does one hip appear higher than the other?

STEP 2: Standing Straight

Changes in posture are one of the earliest warning signs of scoliosis - often they hint at the condition before the curve itself becomes visible. As the spine grows into its curve, the shoulders, waist and hips are thrust out of alignment. Have your child stand up straight while you inspect their posture from the front, from behind and from the side.

  • Is one shoulder higher than the other?
  • Is one arm farther away from the body?
  • Is one shoulder blade higher than the other?
  • Are the hips uneven?
  • Does the back look too rounded?

STEP 3: Clothes Check

Subtle changes in posture can be hard to spot, but sometimes your child’s clothing provides the first visible indication of spinal curvature. During your scoliosis home screening, study your child for signs of ill-fitting or uneven clothing.

  • Is the hemline uneven?
  • Does one pant leg hang lower than the other?
  • Does one shirtsleeve appear longer than the other?

STEP 4: Eyes and Ears

The alignment of your child’s eyes and ears can also signal a spinal abnormality. Examine your child’s eye line and ears to check for scoliosis red flags.

  • Is the eye line tilted?
  • Is the center of the eyes out of alignment with the center of the hips
  • Is the inner ear forward of the shoulder?

STEP 5: Taking a Walk

Scoliosis can sometimes cause a slight limp or other irregularities while walking. Study your child’s normal gait to determine if any of these signs are present.

  • Does your child have a slight limp?
  • Does the body tilt to one side?
  • Does one leg seem shorter than the other?
